In her lecture Barbara Steiner will talk about the frames and conditions of artistic and curatorial production. This not only implies to deal with interdependencies and intricacies but also to find formats and forms, which show this in the project/exhibition. For her, curating exhibitions is more than just presenting objects; it comprises the presentation of constraints, conditions and spheres of interests – be they of political or economical nature. This approach aims at talking about the framework of artistic and curatorial work already in the programme of an institution and in the exhibition itself

Barbara Steiner is curator, editor and author. Since 2016 she has run Kunsthaus Graz. Until September 2017, she was visiting professor for Cultures of the Curatorial at the Academy of Fine Arts Leipzig. In 2012 and 2013, Steiner was artistic director of Europe (to the power of) n, a transnational exhibition series (London, Minsk, Łódź, Istanbul, Oslo, Novi Sad, Brussels, San Sebastián, Beijing, and Taipei), and from 2001 to 2011 director of the Galerie für Zeitgenössische Kunst Leipzig (GfZK).
Besides monographs of artists, Steiner published a series of theme-related books, which examine antagonistic political, economic and social spaces, cultural diversity, and the possibilities of sharing common ground, including: Possible Museums (with Charles Esche), Cologne 2007; Spaces of Negotiation (with as-if wienberlin), 2010; The Captured Museum, 2011; Scenarios about Europe, 2012; The Europen-Book, 2013; Superkilen, 2014; and Creative Infidelities, 2016.
