Food & Visuality: A Five Course Seminar

A five course seminar where each course explores the gastronomic fabric, its visual texture and material knowledge. It trespasses the boundaries of the fictional and the documented and offers to cook fables.

First Course 13:00 – 13:45
F for Food—Food performance by Chef Rø
[aka Rogério Nuno Costa]

F for Food is a gastronomic fable about trickery and fraud. An edible by-product that has been polished, trimmed and varnished in Photoshop. Or about the reduction of Art to the discipline of Design. A poisoned gift dedicated to all those cultural foodies that love to eat the meat without seeing the blood. It’s pretty, but is it Food? Snobbish attire is to be optional. Smartphones, on the contrary, are mandatory: #fforfood

Second Course 14:00 – 14:45
Porn Becomes Norm: Food and Visuality—Sourav Roy
Independent Researcher (Visual Studies)

This presentation problematises the mediatized gaze at food and how it resets our eyes to create a new ‘Visuality’. By successfully creating the ideals of ‘the ways we are supposed to eat’, it partially controls the way we farm, buy, cook and eat.

Third Course 15:00 – 16:00
Common Sense Manifesto of Cooking Practices
Writing together with Ali Akbar Mehta

What new knowledge can cooking practices and the exploration of Food as knowledge offer? If the act of cooking constitutes a performative act, is there a theory that can follow this action? The invitation to create a common sense manifesto is an invitation to discuss the politics and social dynamics that have accompanied the act of cooking – to verbalise and put down shared experiences in the contexts of alternate economies, communities and engendered role-play.
